Evaluation VM

Your evaluation VM

Every step from the download to your first login, and where to continue after that. Keep this page open while you work.

Step 11 of 8

Check the downloaded file

Open PowerShell in the folder where the downloaded file is and run this command. The result must be the same as the SHA-256 value shown in the download box above. If it is different, the download is damaged. Download the file again.

Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 .\octotor-evaluation-latest-hyperv.vhdx

Use the name of the file you downloaded. On Linux or macOS, run sha256sum or shasum -a 256 with the file name instead.

Step 22 of 8

Create the virtual machine

Choose your platform:

  1. Move the downloaded disk file to the folder where you keep your Hyper-V disks. That drive needs at least 20 GB of free space. We recommend 40 GB.
  2. Open Hyper-V Manager and click New → Virtual Machine. Enter a name, for example Octotor evaluation.
  3. On the Specify Generation page choose Generation 2.
  4. On the Assign Memory page enter 8192 MB. If your computer has little memory, enter 4096 MB; that is the minimum.
  5. On the Configure Networking page choose a virtual switch that is connected to your network. Your network must have a DHCP server.
  6. On the Connect Virtual Hard Disk page choose Use an existing virtual hard disk and select the downloaded file.
  7. Click Finish. Then right-click the new virtual machine and open Settings:
    • Under Security, set the Secure Boot template to Microsoft UEFI Certificate Authority.
    • Under Processor, set the number of virtual processors to 2.
  8. Click OK to close the settings.
Done when: the new virtual machine is listed in Hyper-V Manager with the state Off.
Step 33 of 8

Start the virtual machine

  1. In your virtualization program, select the virtual machine and start it.
  2. Open its screen: in Hyper-V Manager click Connect; VMware and VirtualBox open the screen by themselves.
  3. Wait. The first start takes about two minutes. During this time the virtual machine creates its own keys, certificates and passwords. The screen updates by itself.
Done when: the screen shows the line "Octotor is ready" with a web address. Step 4 explains the screen.
Step 44 of 8

Read the screen of the virtual machine

You do not have to log in on this screen. After the virtual machine has received a network address, the screen looks like this:

Octotor evaluation VM — build 20261005.1651 Octotor is ready. Open https://192.168.1.229:8443 in a browser. Web login: admin / octotor Console login: octotor / octotor The address is assigned by DHCP. Give this VM a fixed address in your DHCP server if it must not change. Before you start, read the setup guide: https://www.octotor.com/setup-guide.html This is an evaluation copy of Octotor. It is provided as is, without warranty of any kind.

The address on your screen is different. It comes from your DHCP server. If the screen still says that it is waiting for an address after 90 seconds, check that the virtual switch you chose is connected to a network with a DHCP server.

If you want a fixed address

You have two options. The simple one: reserve a fixed address for this virtual machine in your DHCP server. The other one: set the address on the virtual machine itself. Log in on its screen with the user name octotor and the password octotor, open the network settings file with sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces and add these lines, with your own addresses:

auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 192.168.1.50/24 gateway 192.168.1.1 dns-nameservers 192.168.1.1

Save the file and restart the virtual machine. The screen then shows the new address.

Step 55 of 8

Log in for the first time

  1. Open the web address from the screen in your browser. The browser shows a certificate warning once, because the certificate is self-signed. Choose to continue to the page.
  2. Log in with the user name admin and the password octotor.
Done when: you see the Octotor Dashboard.
Step 66 of 8

Continue with the Setup Guide

Steps 1 to 6 of the Setup Guide describe the installation. They are already done in this virtual machine. Continue with Step 7: create your first customer. After that you add credentials and your first computer.

Step 77 of 8

What is already set up

  • Seven scheduled tasks on the Scheduler page. They collect information from Windows computers, Linux computers and QNAP devices, check Windows logons, check Veeam backups, read switch information over SNMP and sync Check Point firewalls. They start working when you add computers and devices.
  • Four alert rules on the Alerts page. They alert on failed Windows logons, on less than 10% free space on the system drive or on a second drive, and on a switch port that runs slower than 1 Gbps.
  • A Community Plus license for up to 10 assets, with every feature and every connector enabled. It is valid for one year. To renew it, open the License page, click Update license and send us the request file.

You can change or delete all of these.

Step 88 of 8

Later: upgrade, buy a license, remove

  • Upgrade to a new Octotor version. Log in on the screen of the virtual machine with the user name octotor and the password octotor, and run this command. Your data is kept. curl -fsSL https://get.octotor.com/upgrade | sudo bash
  • Buy a license. Write to licensing@octotor.com. We send you the license file and the two commands that prepare the virtual machine for it.
  • Remove the evaluation. Delete the virtual machine in your virtualization program and delete the downloaded file. Nothing else was installed.
